A.I. Spending Sets a Record, With No End in Sight

The AI infrastructure spending spree hit a new peak this week. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta collectively reported more than $130 billion in quarterly capital expenditures on Wednesday, almost all of it going toward building out AI data centers.

This isn't a one-time splurge. All four companies signaled they plan to keep spending at these levels or higher in the coming quarters. We're watching the biggest infrastructure buildout in tech history unfold in real time.

For anyone building with AI tools, this matters more than it might seem. These massive investments determine how much compute capacity will be available, which directly affects API pricing, model availability, and how quickly new capabilities reach the market.

The scale is hard to wrap your head around. $130 billion in three months is more than most countries spend on their entire tech sectors annually. It's a bet that AI demand will justify the expense.

The companies are essentially saying they'd rather overbuild than risk being caught without enough capacity. That's good news if you're worried about API rate limits or waiting lists for new models. It's less good news if you're a shareholder wondering when profits will match the spending.

This arms race also explains why we keep seeing new model releases and capability jumps. With this much capital deployed, these companies need to show results. Expect the pace of AI development to stay intense through 2026 and beyond.
