Americans really don't want AI data centers as neighbors. A new Gallup survey found that over 70 percent of people oppose data center construction in their area, with only seven percent strongly in favor.
To put that in perspective, data centers are now more unpopular than nuclear power plants. Even at the peak of anti-nuclear sentiment, opposition only hit 63 percent. That's saying something.
The survey pulled from two groups: 1,000 randomly selected adults across all 50 states in March 2026, plus another 2,054 Gallup Panel members in April 2026. So this isn't a small sample reacting to one local controversy.
Why does this matter? Because AI companies are racing to build massive data centers to train and run their models. These facilities need enormous amounts of power and cooling, which means noise, energy consumption, and infrastructure strain on local communities.
The NIMBY problem could become a real bottleneck for AI development. If you can't build the infrastructure, you can't scale the models. And if every community fights new construction, AI companies will face serious delays and costs.
This also explains why tech companies are suddenly so interested in nuclear power and other energy solutions. They need to power their AI ambitions somewhere, and public opposition is making that harder than expected.
