Billie Eilish is wondering out loud whether the path that launched her career even exists anymore. In a new WIRED interview promoting her concert film Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), she talked about SoundCloud and whether future artists can use it the way she did.
For context, Eilish and her brother Finneas uploaded "Ocean Eyes" to SoundCloud in 2015 when she was just 13. The song went viral, landed her a record deal, and kicked off one of the biggest music careers of the past decade. SoundCloud was the launchpad.
But platforms change. What worked in 2015 doesn't necessarily work now. The algorithm shifts, the audience moves, the discovery mechanics evolve. Eilish seems to recognize that the conditions that helped her break through might not be replicable today.
This matters if you're thinking about how AI tools get discovered and adopted. The platforms that work today for reaching users, whether that's Product Hunt, Twitter, or niche communities, won't necessarily work the same way in five years. Distribution advantages are temporary.
