Bumble is killing off its signature swipe right feature in favor of an AI-powered matching system. The dating app announced it's developing an AI assistant that will handle the matching process, though they haven't shared much about how it'll actually work yet.
This is a pretty big shift for a company that built its brand on giving users control over who they connect with. Instead of manually swiping through profiles, the AI will apparently do the heavy lifting of finding potential matches for you.
For anyone using AI tools at work, this is another example of companies betting that people would rather delegate tedious tasks to AI than do them manually. The swipe mechanic worked for years, but it's also kind of exhausting when you're doing it for the hundredth time.
The obvious question is whether people actually want an AI making romantic decisions for them. Dating apps have tried algorithmic matching before with mixed results. Bumble's betting that their AI assistant will be different, but we'll have to wait and see what that actually means in practice.
No word yet on when this feature rolls out or whether the swipe will disappear entirely or just become optional. Bumble's clearly trying to differentiate itself as other dating apps pile on AI features, but the execution will matter a lot more than the concept.
