Ford's Mustang Cobra Jet sets a new EV quarter mile record at 6.87 seconds

Ford Racing just shattered the EV quarter mile record with its Mustang Cobra Jet 2200, clocking 6.87 seconds at 221 mph during an NHRA event in Charlotte. That's 0.75 seconds faster than Ford's own previous record from last September.

The secret? A complete redesign that puts 2,200 horsepower to the wheels while actually reducing weight. Ford switched from four motors and inverters to just two, cutting weight in half while boosting efficiency to 98 percent and adding 600 horsepower. The whole system runs on a 900-volt architecture with a 32 kWh battery that charges in 20 minutes.

What makes this drag racer interesting is how it borrows from traditional racing. It has a clutch for instant power dumps and a multi-speed transmission that keeps the motors in their ideal power band, shaving up to a second off the quarter mile time. There's even a pyrotechnic circuit breaker that uses a small explosive charge to instantly cut high-voltage connections for safety.

Some of this tech, particularly the high-efficiency motors and 900-volt system, could eventually make it to consumer EVs. But there's a catch. Ford and other US automakers have been pulling back on pure EV development lately, with Ford recently announcing it would reboot the F-150 Lightning as a hybrid with a gas generator.

For AI and tech professionals, this is a reminder that innovation often happens in unexpected places. Racing programs like this serve as real-world testing grounds for technologies that could improve the EVs many of us will drive in the future, even as automakers hedge their bets on electrification strategies.
