Epic Games just opened up AI-powered conversations to Fortnite creators. Instead of writing out every possible dialogue branch, you can now define a character with simple prompts and let the AI handle the rest.

The tool lets you set up who the character is, what they know, how they think, and how they behave. Then you pick a voice and the NPC can have unscripted conversations with players. Think quest givers, narrators, or any character that needs to respond dynamically.

This follows Epic's experiment last year with an AI-powered Darth Vader that famously went off-script, swearing in a recreation of James Earl Jones' voice. That incident showed both the potential and the risks of letting AI characters loose in a live game.

For creators, this is a massive time-saver. Writing dialogue trees for every possible player interaction is tedious work. Now you can define the character's personality and knowledge base, and the AI fills in the conversational gaps.

The bigger picture here is that game development is getting more accessible. Tools that used to require programming expertise or hours of content creation are becoming prompt-based. That's the same shift happening across creative software, just now hitting interactive entertainment.

One notable restriction: Epic is clearly setting guardrails. The headline's joke about not dating these characters suggests there are content policies in place, likely to avoid the kind of issues other AI chatbots have faced when users try to push boundaries.
