Gemini is getting eyes on the road. Google and Volvo announced at I/O that the AI assistant will tap into external cameras on the upcoming EX60 SUV to interpret what's around the vehicle.
The integration works because Volvo uses Google's Android Automotive as its operating system. That deep connection lets Gemini access camera feeds directly, not just through a phone app.
The first use case is translating confusing parking signs, which anyone who's circled a block looking for legal street parking can appreciate. Google says other applications are possible but didn't specify what those might be.
This matters because it's one of the first times a multimodal AI will have persistent access to real-world sensors in a consumer product. Most AI vision features today require you to point your phone at something. Here, the car's cameras are always watching.
It also shows how AI assistants are moving beyond chat interfaces into physical environments. The same pattern is playing out with smart glasses, robots, and now vehicles.
The EX60 is Volvo's upcoming electric SUV, though the companies didn't share a specific launch date for when this Gemini feature will be available.
