General Motors just announced it's bringing Google's Gemini AI assistant to around four million vehicles on US roads. If you're driving a 2022 or newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, or GMC with Google built-in, you'll get the upgrade through an over-the-air update rolling out over the next several months.
This is one of the largest Gemini deployments in the automotive industry. GM is replacing the existing Google Assistant in its infotainment system with Gemini, promising a smarter and more intuitive experience that improves over time.
For context, this means millions of drivers will interact with a more capable AI while on the road. Gemini can handle more complex queries and conversations compared to the previous assistant, potentially making voice controls actually useful instead of frustrating.
The timing matters because automakers are racing to integrate AI assistants that can compete with what people already use on their phones. GM is betting that Gemini's conversational abilities will make their vehicles feel more modern and connected.
This also signals how quickly AI assistants are moving from experimental features to standard equipment. Four million vehicles is a massive user base for any AI deployment, and it's happening through software updates to cars already on the road.
