Google shuts down Project Mariner

Google just killed off Project Mariner, the experimental AI agent that was supposed to handle web tasks for you. The project officially shut down on May 4th, 2026, according to a notice now sitting on its landing page.

Project Mariner launched back in December 2024 as one of those ambitious "AI will do everything for you" experiments. Google later updated it to handle up to 10 tasks simultaneously, which seemed promising at the time.

But here's the thing. Google isn't throwing the tech away. They've been quietly integrating Project Mariner's capabilities into other products over the past year, particularly Gemini Agent.

This is classic Google. Launch an experimental project, see what works, then absorb the useful bits into the main product line. It's less about failure and more about consolidation.

For anyone using AI agents in their workflow, this matters because the underlying tech isn't disappearing. It's just moving into tools you're more likely to actually use, like Gemini. The standalone experiment is done, but the automation capabilities are sticking around where they make more sense.
