Google Signs A.I. Deal With the Pentagon

Google is now officially working with the Pentagon on AI, marking another big tech company's entry into defense contracts. The deal will put Google's AI capabilities on classified military networks, similar to agreements already in place with OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI.

This is a notable shift for Google, which has historically been more cautious about military work. Back in 2018, employee protests led the company to drop out of Project Maven, a Pentagon AI program. Times have clearly changed.

The Pentagon is clearly shopping around for AI partners. OpenAI and xAI already have their own deals for classified network access, showing how quickly the defense sector is adopting these tools. It's becoming a competitive space.

Interestingly, Anthropic is not part of this club. There's apparently some kind of dispute keeping them out of Pentagon deals, though the details aren't clear. Given Anthropic's focus on AI safety, there might be philosophical differences at play.

For anyone building with AI tools, this matters because it shows where the technology is heading. When the Pentagon commits to multiple AI providers, it signals both the maturity of these systems and the growing expectation that AI will handle sensitive, high-stakes work. That bar is rising for everyone.
