Intel just released two new processors, the Core Ultra 5 250K Plus and Core Ultra 7 270K Plus, priced at $199 and $299 respectively. They're the same Arrow Lake architecture as the original 200S series, but they're arriving at possibly the worst time to build a PC in years.
Here's the problem: AI datacenters are hoovering up memory and storage chips, which has sent consumer PC part prices through the roof. A 32GB DDR5 kit and decent 2TB SSD that cost under $200 last August now runs you $600 to $800. That's three to four times more expensive for the same components.
The chips themselves are actually pretty good. They're power efficient and handle heavy multi-threaded workloads better than AMD's similarly priced options. AMD's older chips still edge ahead slightly in gaming performance, but Intel's offering competitive value where it counts for productivity work.
For anyone building or upgrading a workstation right now, these processors represent one of the few bright spots in an otherwise painful market. The CPU might be reasonably priced, but you'll feel the pain everywhere else in your build.
The broader lesson here: AI's impact on hardware availability isn't just about GPUs anymore. The ripple effects are hitting every component that uses the same manufacturing capacity, and that means higher costs for anyone trying to build a capable AI development machine or content creation rig.
