Is AI video just a prequel? Runway's CEO thinks world models are next

AI video tools have evolved incredibly fast. What seemed like a gimmick a year ago is now part of serious creative workflows, and Runway has been right in the middle of that transformation.

The company has raised nearly $860 million at a $5.3 billion valuation, putting it in direct competition with Google and OpenAI. That's serious money backing serious ambition.

But here's the interesting part. Runway's CEO isn't treating video generation as the endgame. He sees it as a stepping stone to something bigger: world models.

World models are systems that understand how things actually work in physical space, not just how they look. Think less about generating a clip of a cat jumping, and more about understanding gravity, momentum, and spatial relationships well enough to simulate reality.

For anyone building with AI, this matters because world models could power everything from better robotics to more realistic simulations to entirely new kinds of interactive experiences. Video generation taught these systems to predict what comes next visually. World models would let them predict what happens next physically.

Runway's betting that the same infrastructure that made AI video possible can be pushed further. If they're right, we're still in the early chapters of what these models can do.
