Mark Zuckerberg announces ‘completely private' encrypted Meta AI chat

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Incognito Chat, calling it "the first major AI product where there is no log of your conversations stored on servers." The feature uses end-to-end encryption, meaning Meta itself can't access what you're asking or the AI's responses.

This is different from incognito modes in other AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude. Those services don't save chats to your history, but the companies can still see the messages flowing through their servers. Meta's version encrypts everything in transit.

The timing is interesting given that Meta recently removed end-to-end encryption from Instagram DMs. Now they're positioning privacy as a competitive advantage for their AI product.

For anyone using AI tools for sensitive work, brainstorming confidential ideas, or discussing proprietary information, this matters. Most AI chatbots explicitly state in their terms that your conversations may be reviewed by humans or used for training.

The big question is trust. Meta's privacy track record isn't exactly stellar, and end-to-end encryption is only as good as the implementation. But if it works as advertised, this could push other AI providers to offer similar privacy features.

Messages in Incognito Chat aren't saved to your chat history, just like incognito modes elsewhere. The difference is the encryption layer that keeps Meta's own systems from accessing the content.
