OpenAI is reportedly launching a phone for ChatGPT

OpenAI's first hardware product might not be that mysterious Jony Ive device after all. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the company is fast-tracking development of its own phone, aiming to start mass production in early 2027.

The phone will reportedly run on a customized version of MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 chip, expected to launch this fall. That's the successor to the Dimensity 9500 currently powering devices like the Vivo X300 Pro and Oppo Find X9 Pro.

The standout feature is apparently the image signal processor. Kuo says it will have enhanced HDR capabilities, suggesting OpenAI is betting heavily on camera and visual processing as a differentiator.

This is a significant pivot from the Jony Ive collaboration that's been rumored for years. Instead of waiting for some futuristic AI gadget, OpenAI seems to be taking the more direct route of putting ChatGPT into a phone format people already understand.

For anyone using AI tools daily, a phone built specifically around ChatGPT could mean better integration than the apps we're currently using. Think native voice processing, camera-based AI features, and potentially offline capabilities that current implementations can't match.

The 2027 timeline also puts OpenAI in direct competition with whatever Apple and Google are cooking up for AI-first mobile experiences. The race to own the AI hardware layer is officially on.
