Oscars says AI actors, writing cannot win awards

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just made it official. AI-generated actors and AI-written scripts are not eligible for Oscar nominations. If it's not created by a human, it's not competing for a statue.

This matters because we're already seeing AI creep into production. Studios are testing synthetic voices, digital performances, and script assistance tools. The Academy is drawing the line before things get messy.

The new eligibility requirements don't ban AI from filmmaking entirely. You can still use AI tools in production, effects, or editing. But the core creative work that gets recognized, the performances and writing, has to come from actual people.

It's a defensive move, but a smart one. The film industry watched what happened with writing and art communities as AI tools exploded. They're setting boundaries early instead of scrambling later.

For anyone building AI tools for creative work, this is the pattern to watch. Industries are figuring out where the human-AI line sits. Film just planted its flag on the side of human authorship for the work that matters most.
