Pornhub just restored access for UK adults, but only if they use Apple's age verification system. The porn site went dark for new UK visitors back in February, protesting the government's age verification requirements.
The company's issue wasn't with age checks themselves. It was with how the UK wanted them done. Most proposed solutions involved third-party services that would know both your identity and your browsing habits, which is exactly the kind of data leak waiting to happen.
Apple's approach works differently. The verification happens on your device using existing identity documents you've already provided to Apple. The site never sees your actual ID or personal details, just a yes or no on whether you're old enough.
This matters beyond adult content. We're seeing a wave of age verification laws worldwide, and how they get implemented affects everyone. Device-level checks like Apple's could become the template for age-gating AI tools, social platforms, or any service that needs to verify users without creating honeypots of sensitive data.
Pornhub says this method is more secure than the alternatives, and they're probably right. When verification happens locally on hardware you control, there's no central database of "people who visited this site" for hackers or governments to target.
The UK's Online Safety Act is pushing more platforms toward these checks. Expect other sites to follow Pornhub's lead and accept device-based verification where available, while continuing to block access in regions that mandate less private alternatives.
