‘Reservation Hijacking’ Scams Target Travelers. Here’s How to Stay Safe

A new wave of travel scams is hitting people where they're most vulnerable: right before or during their trips. Fraudsters are calling travelers pretending to be hotel employees, claiming there's an urgent payment problem with their reservation.

The scam works because it preys on timing and anxiety. You get a call from someone who knows your name, your hotel, and your check-in date. They say your credit card was declined or there's a system error, and if you don't provide payment details immediately, your reservation will be canceled.

The scary part is how much information these scammers have. They're likely getting reservation details from data breaches, phishing attacks on booking platforms, or even by scraping confirmation emails. That insider knowledge makes the calls feel legitimate.

Here's your defense: never give payment information to someone who calls you, even if they sound official. If there's really a problem with your reservation, hang up and call the hotel directly using the number from their official website or your original booking confirmation.

Also watch for red flags like pressure to act immediately, requests to pay via gift cards or wire transfer, or calls that come through messaging apps instead of regular phone lines. Real hotels will work with you on payment issues, they won't threaten immediate cancellation.

This matters if you're traveling for work or conferences, which many people in the AI space do regularly. One compromised credit card can derail your trip and create headaches that distract from why you're traveling in the first place. Stay skeptical, verify independently, and protect your payment info like you'd protect your API keys.
