Spotify just made its Prompted Playlists smarter. The feature, which lets you describe what you want to listen to and get a customized playlist in return, now works for podcasts too. Previously, it was music only.
The expansion rolled out on Tuesday and is available to Premium subscribers. If you've been using Prompted Playlists since the beta launched back in December, the podcast addition is a natural next step. Instead of just generating a vibe-matched music mix, you can now surface podcast episodes tailored to whatever you're curious about.
This is essentially Spotify leaning harder into AI-driven discovery. The original music version already functioned like a conversational search tool, letting you type something like "chill focus music for a rainy afternoon" and get a playlist built around that prompt. Now imagine doing the same for podcasts. Looking for shows about bootstrapping a SaaS company? Or deep dives on neuroscience? That's the idea.
For anyone drowning in podcast options, this could genuinely help. Discovery has always been one of the weakest points in the podcast ecosystem. Most people find new shows through word of mouth or algorithmic recommendations that feel like shots in the dark. A prompt-based approach gives you more control over what surfaces.
It also signals where Spotify sees AI fitting into its product. Rather than building a standalone chatbot or bolting on a generic assistant, they're weaving generative AI into the core listening experience. That's a smarter play. The tool works because it solves an actual problem, not because it's flashy.
For creators and marketers who produce podcasts, this matters too. If Spotify's AI is matching shows to natural language prompts, the way you title, describe, and tag your episodes becomes even more important. Think of it like SEO, but for an AI recommendation layer.
The feature is still limited to Premium users, so it's not reaching Spotify's entire audience yet. But as a signal of where content discovery is headed, it's worth paying attention to. AI that helps you find what you didn't know you were looking for is the kind of upgrade that actually sticks.
