US to safety test new AI models from Google, Microsoft, xAI

The US Commerce Department just locked in safety testing agreements with Google, Microsoft, and xAI. These deals mean the government gets to evaluate new AI models from these companies before they hit the market.

This builds on voluntary commitments that started during the Biden administration, when major AI labs agreed to let the government peek under the hood of their most powerful systems. Now those handshake deals are becoming more formal arrangements.

For anyone building products on top of these platforms, this could mean more predictable release cycles but potentially longer waits for cutting-edge features. The tradeoff is that models might be more thoroughly vetted for safety issues before you integrate them into your workflow.

The timing matters because we're seeing AI capabilities advance faster than regulatory frameworks can keep up. These agreements give the government a way to spot potential risks without slowing down innovation completely.

It's worth noting that these are still voluntary partnerships, not legal requirements. But with three of the biggest players signing on, it's becoming the expected standard for frontier AI development in the US.
