WhatsApp launches totally private 'incognito' conversations with its AI chatbot

WhatsApp just rolled out 'incognito mode' for its Meta AI chatbot. These conversations won't be saved to your chat history, giving you a way to ask questions without leaving a digital trail.

Meta is positioning this as a privacy feature. If you're testing prompts, asking sensitive questions, or just don't want AI conversations cluttering your chat list, incognito mode keeps things clean. The company says these chats are still end-to-end encrypted like regular WhatsApp messages.

But there's a tradeoff. Cybersecurity experts point out that deleting chat history by default makes it harder to track what went wrong if the AI gives bad advice or behaves unexpectedly. Without logs, there's no paper trail for accountability.

This matters if you're using AI for work decisions. A private chat might feel safer in the moment, but if you need to reference what the AI told you or prove what recommendations it made, that context is gone.

The feature puts WhatsApp in line with other AI chatbots that offer temporary or private modes. It's a clear signal that Meta is trying to differentiate its AI offering by leaning into privacy, even as that creates new questions about oversight.

For now, incognito mode is optional. You can still use Meta AI the regular way if you want your conversations saved. The choice is yours, but it's worth thinking through what you're giving up along with that chat history.
