A man allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's house

San Francisco police arrested a man early Thursday morning after he allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's house in the North Beach neighborhood. The incendiary device caused a fire at an exterior gate around 4:12 AM local time.

An hour later, police responding to a separate threat at a business discovered it was OpenAI's headquarters. The same suspect was making threats to burn down that building too. He was arrested on the spot.

OpenAI confirmed the incident in a statement, thanking SFPD for their quick response. No one was injured in either incident, and the company says it's assisting with the investigation.

This comes as AI becomes increasingly polarizing. While adoption of AI tools continues to grow, public backlash against the technology's expansion into gaming, customer service, and other areas is mounting.

Altman himself has warned about AI's potential impact on jobs, which hasn't helped his public image. A recent New Yorker investigation also raised questions about his leadership style at OpenAI, describing it as allegedly manipulative.

For anyone building with or investing in AI, this is a reminder that the technology's rapid advancement is creating real tensions. The gap between AI enthusiasts and skeptics isn't just philosophical anymore, it's becoming a safety concern for people at the center of the industry.
