Google just dropped a dedicated Windows app for Gemini, and it's basically another front door to their AI chatbot. If you're already living in Gemini for work, this might actually be useful. If not, you can safely ignore it.
The standout feature is the Alt + Space shortcut that pulls up a search bar from anywhere. Type a query and it works like Google search with AI Mode baked in, so you can ask follow-up questions without opening a browser tab.
But it goes beyond web search. The app can dig through your local files, other installed apps, and your Google Drive to find what you need. That's the kind of integration that could actually save time if you're constantly context-switching between tools.
There's also built-in screen sharing that works with Google Lens. Point it at your monitor and run AI-powered searches on whatever's displayed. Useful for visual research or troubleshooting without screenshotting and uploading manually.
The app rolled out globally today in English. Surprisingly, Google didn't limit this to Windows 11. It works on Windows 10 too, which means a much wider potential user base.
For AI-heavy workflows, this is about reducing friction. One less browser tab, one keyboard shortcut, and tighter integration with your actual files. Whether that's worth another app install depends on how much you're already using Gemini.
