Sony just announced it's gutting the TV guide experience for Bravia TV owners who use over-the-air antennas. Starting late May, 2023-2025 models will lose channel logos, thumbnail images, and comprehensive program listings.
The changes hit harder than you'd expect. The guide will now only show programs from recently watched channels, and depending on the channel, you might not see program information at all. Set-top box users are also affected, with the dedicated menu being replaced by a stripped-down Control menu that also ditches thumbnails.
Sony offered zero explanation for why they're removing these features. For cord-cutters who rely on antenna TV, this is a significant downgrade that makes the guide much less useful for discovering what's on.
This matters because it's a reminder that smart TV features can disappear at any time through software updates. You might buy premium hardware expecting certain capabilities, only to have the manufacturer remove them later without your consent.
The timing is particularly odd given the rise of cord-cutting. More people are ditching cable and streaming services due to cost, making over-the-air TV more relevant, not less. Sony seems to be moving in the opposite direction of user needs.
If you're shopping for a TV and plan to use an antenna, this is worth considering. Hardware features matter, but so does whether a company will maintain the software experience you paid for.
