Tesla's Full Self-Driving system is finally coming to Europe, and the Netherlands is leading the way. The country's vehicle regulatory authority, RDW, approved the driver assistance tech after more than a year and a half of testing on both test tracks and public roads.
RDW called FSD Supervised a positive contribution to road safety, but they were crystal clear about one thing: this isn't actually self-driving. Drivers stay fully responsible and must keep control at all times. It's the same supervised setup Tesla uses in the US, just with European regulatory blessing.
This matters because it's Tesla's first regulatory win in Europe for FSD, and it could cascade across the EU. RDW noted that this approval might lead to acceptance in all EU member states, which would massively expand Tesla's automated driving footprint beyond North America and China.
The timing is interesting given Tesla's ongoing safety scrutiny in the US. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating FSD collisions in low visibility conditions, including incidents involving the supervised version.
