X's messaging app, XChat, may be available soon

Elon Musk's X is finally launching XChat, a standalone messaging app that's now available for pre-order on the App Store with an expected release date of April 17. This isn't the IRC client some of you might remember from the early 2000s, it's a dedicated messaging platform specifically for X users.

Musk first teased an upgraded direct messaging feature for X back in mid-2025, promising encryption and a completely new architecture. He originally said all X users would get it in June 2025, but true to form, that timeline didn't hold. Instead of just upgrading DMs within X, the company built a whole separate app.

XChat offers end-to-end encryption for all conversations, plus the ability to edit and delete messages for everyone in a chat. You can also block screenshots and set messages to disappear within five minutes, which is useful if you're discussing anything sensitive. Group chats can include up to 481 members, and you can make calls across devices.

The most interesting promise? X claims XChat won't have ads and won't track users. That's a notable departure from the main X platform, which relies heavily on advertising revenue. Whether that model is sustainable for a free messaging app remains to be seen.

For anyone using AI tools professionally, another encrypted messaging platform might seem redundant in a world with Signal, WhatsApp, and Telegram. But if your network lives on X, having a dedicated app for those conversations could be more convenient than juggling multiple platforms. The real question is whether X's user base will adopt yet another messaging app when they already have plenty of options.
